No matter whatever field you hail from, quality and success always go hand in hand. Both of them are indispensable as the other without another is incomplete. The juxtaposition of these two dictates every step in the process of becoming great. Therefore today I am going to discuss the qualities which every blogger must possess. But before delving into this topic, let me tell you a true incident. A couple of years back I had come across a guy who exuded talent in almost every sphere. He was a valedictorian in his college, a fun loving person, a great soccer player, a good friend, brother and son. If these weren’t enough already, he was handsome and smart too. Girls used to swoon all over him, wherever he went. I believe you got the picture of it. He was like a Brad Pitt of our University. We all knew that he would someday achieve an influential position in the society. But imagine my horror when one day I came to know that he committed suicide. It was a bolt from the blue. No one has seen it coming. With the passing of time though, facts unravelled about his life. Our illusion of this perfect guy was shattered. He was laid off from the Bank where he used to work as an investment banker, due to his flaky behaviour. His lack of patience and precariousness turned out to be his bane. He was jobless, homeless and his girl friend had left him. Few months later his parents passed away, leaving him stranded on his own. He drowned himself in alcohol and drugs and nothing to look forward to. And in the heat of his hay wired life, he did the unthinkable. I was really devastated by the news. Although I was never so close with him, I admired him nonetheless. May he find peace, I pray.
The reason I shared this incident with you people is because I wanted to substantiate the importance of good qualities. Though this guy was a prodigy, imbibed with talents, he never knew how to channelize them in the right way. Therefore without further rambling, lets see some of the most basic qualities.
How To Become A Blogger
Patience & Perseverance:
We are all too familiar with the old adage that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Our forefathers knew this and had therefore overemphasized. But believe me when I say patience and perseverance is really the key in fulfilling your dreams. In the context of blogging, it is a hallmark. Every aspiring blogger should have this quality. No one becomes famous overnight. It requires back breaking hours of laborious task of typing and patiently waiting to make your way through the top. Every renowned blogger that I have come across will admit that at first it felt it’s not going to work. But steadily they have risen to the position where people look up to them. Never lose hope and always keep your eyes on the goal. Maybe it can take months or even years to reach the top. But slow and steady wins the race.
Love What You Do:
Whether you are a blogger by profession or just as a hobby, you should love blogging. Of course if you are blogging then I’ll presume that you have an interest but just for the record, liking is a must. Doing things in a perfunctory manner will never get you anywhere. In fact, it will stymie your progress and by the end of the day, you’ll get frustrated. But if you love no matter what you do, then the road is already paved for you. I know money is a very important driving force behind every facet of life. But doing something just for the sake of it is just not right. It will show in your work. The discrepancies, the anomalies will creep in and in the long run you will feel stranded.
Another important quality is the presence of knowledge in your chosen field. Profound knowledge, especially for bloggers is very vital. Think it in this way, you come across a blog and find an informative article. And on the basis of the materials available in that blog, you move forward. But what if the article which the blogger has written is flawed? What if his knowledge base is incomplete and in haste he has posted the material without giving it a fore thought? Can you imagine your position then? If you take that information and believe it to be credible and use it in your project, what do you think will happen to you? Hope you get the picture here. What I am trying to say is, little knowledge can be devastating. It is actually a crime for bloggers, I believe, to misguide their visitors. And given other people drop by your site to clear their doubts and to learn. Therefore, always do a thorough research on the topic that you are about to post.
Power Of Expression:
What are words? They are nothing but a way to express your thoughts and ideas. When language as we know it now was not discovered, our ancestors used to communicate with the help of body gestures and signs. But with the advent of words, the power to express increased exponentially. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Shakespeare of language or just a guy next door, your thoughts should be coherent. It should have the power to transcend boundaries and reach out to the mass. We have seen that many anonymous singers who give us Goosebumps are not the one with the best vocal techniques. But still they hold a pivotal role in stirring up our emotions.
Method Of Writing:
Having thus said about the power of expression, the next to join our list is the method of writing. Every individual has his own way of expressing things. The subtle nuances of writing technique vary from person to person. Don’t beat about the bush and come straight to the point. But hold on. Don’t rush and don’t be abrupt in your way. You should firmly hold the attention and interest of your readers. Try to be as informal as possible (without being offensive though). Your reader should feel as if his or her friend is parting them the information. Be behind the wheel and take your fellow readers on a short and memorable trip (not literally, mind you !). No one will judge you or score you on the basis of your writing but try to have the basic grammar correct. Your article or blog should not be ambiguous and should not try to imply something else. Whatever you are writing on, keep it short and simple.
Try having an account on famous social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. You don’t need to be a celebrity and post every few minutes so much so that your fans give to hoots. But atleast keep in touch with your readers and other bloggers. Updating your profile once in a while is great. Picking brains of other fellow bloggers will flood you with new vision and will expand your horizon. Don’t try to pull all that enigmatic person type stunt. It used to work for movie artists in earlier days. You will end up losing your blog readers’ base.
Curiosity Is Not A Sin:
The reason we consider ourselves to the most successful animal is because we humans are exceptionally curious. Without inquisition, you won’t learn new things. Your learning process will be impeded. Have you ever wondered why we were so good at picking up things and stuffs in a matter of time when we were kids? And why now as we cross that adult threshold age, things get a little turbid? It is nothing but inquisitiveness. During childhood days, we weren’t afraid to try new things but with the onset of maturity, many factors come at play. Don’t lose that child within you. Be curious to learn new things. It will expand and add up to your knowledge base. But it doesn’t mean you will pry into others’ personal matters. No. No. No. It is not what I mean. All I am saying is have an open perspective all the time.
No matter how good a writer or a blogger you are, if you are not able to make people aware of your talent, it is of no use. Marketing is a great way to overcome the physical boundary. You might be sitting in America or Australia and writing tons and tons of materials, posting on your blog but your knowledge is being limited within your own space. By marketing, using promotion strategies you will be able to let your readers get a piece of you. And by marketing I don’t mean spending millions. No. Use social media rampantly. Tag and share with your friends and ask them for their support. Comment on other blogs and in return they will visit your own. Ask for assistance from experience bloggers. Attach your blog articles that are known as back link and drop your comments. Guest posting is a good way to channelize visitors to your blog. Many bloggers accept various good posts from other bloggers. In this way both the bloggers will be benefited. Join bloggers’ community. Take part in discussion and share your views. Remember, it becomes all futile if you can’t share your views with others. All your hard work will add up to nothing if you don’t show what you have within you.
Be Humble & Polite:
You might have heard this many times. But it is really true. You can’t refute that humbleness and smile can win millions of hearts. If someone points out your flaws in your article, never retaliate but accept them with a simple thank you. Learn from past mistakes. No one is perfect but we can atleast strive to be. Your comments and articles should be polite and never should they sound arrogant. It won’t get you far. Always be ready to accept your fault. Never go into any arguments with fellow readers or bloggers, even if they resort to. With respect and politeness answer them back. Reply to all the comments which others have left on your blog.
So, these are some of the basic qualities which you necessarily should posses if you are a blogger or planning to be a one. Though the list is not exhaustive, I have tried my best to explain and highlight the main ones. I might sound like a broken record, reiterating the fact that no one can have all the good qualities. We are bound to have a negative side in tandem with the positive. But whether the negative side overwhelms the positive one, it totally depends on us. Hope you guys find this post quite meaningful and coherent. I eagerly wait for your response and much valuable comment. I will be back with more posts on blog related topic such as this. See you all very soon. And to all bloggers out there, wish you luck. Godspeed !!!
